What is The Green Backyard?

The Green Backyard is a vibrant community growing project in the heart of Peterborough, which was established in 2009 and is run entirely by volunteers. From this urban space we have transformed a once derelict former allotment site into a beautiful and productive community garden that is open to everyone. We are passionate about sustainability and work to raise awareness of environmental issues by involving the community in informative, practical demonstrations and workshops. We work with many different individuals and groups, as well as various schools, businesses and other organisations from across Peterborough and beyond. The Green Backyard became a registered charity in January 2014. Our constitution describes our charitable aims.

The Green Backyard could not exist without the people of Peterborough working together to make our city a more friendly and healthy place to live, so why not come down on one of our regular volunteer days to get involved and learn a whole host of new skills at the same time? From fruit and vegetable growing to habitat creation and composting, or working in our Backyard Food shop, there’s something for everyone! We also hold a wide variety of events throughout the year; from live music and arts jams to craft fairs and performing arts. Please see our events calendar to find out what’s coming up. We aim to not only bring the people and communities of Peterborough together but to help create an innovative and fruitful place for them to thrive.

Finding us

The main entrance to our site is on Oundle Road, Peterborough immediately next to a block of flats called The Apex. If you are driving to the site and want a postcode for your satnav, then you can use PE2 8AT.

Plans for the future?

We’ve got big plans for the future. We’d like to see The Green Backyard become a community-led centre of sustainability and community development that champions the ambitions and achievements of the citizens of Peterborough. Our plans over the next 5 years include buying the land on which we are currently situated, establishing a lively and welcoming cafe that serves healthy, locally grown food, building a specialised learning centre and community venue that caters for Peterborough and the surrounding regions and create a series of social enterprise business units to nurture the next generation of socially and environmentally minded organisations. And, of course, our gardens will continue to grow as a tranquil and productive urban oasis, a beautiful haven for both the people and wildlife of the city.
