About Us

The Green Backyard is a vibrant community growing project in the heart of Peterborough, established in 2009. From this urban space we have transformed a once derelict former allotment site into a beautiful and productive community garden that is open to everyone. We are passionate about sustainability and work to raise awareness of environmental issues by involving the community in informative, practical demonstrations and workshops. We work with many different individuals and groups, as well as schools, businesses and other organisations from across Peterborough and beyond.

The Green Backyard became a registered charity in January 2014. Our constitution describes our charitable aims.

The Green Backyard could not exist without the people of Peterborough working together to make our city a more friendly and healthy place to live, so why not come down on one of our regular volunteer days to get involved and learn a whole host of new skills at the same time? From fruit and vegetable growing to habitat creation and composting, there’s something for everyone!

We aim to not only bring the people and communities of Peterborough together, but to help create an innovative and fruitful place for them to thrive. Please see our events calendar to find out what’s coming up.

Our plans for the future

We’ve got big plans for the future. We’d like to see The Green Backyard become a community-led centre of sustainability and community development that champions the ambitions and achievements of the citizens of Peterborough. We have a lease to stay on the land on which we are currently situated so we can take forward our plans and, of course, our gardens will continue to grow as a tranquil and productive urban oasis, a beautiful haven for both the people and wildlife of the city.
